Extreme Cycling: two local men enter the world's most grueling bike race...Race Across America

John Palmer and Matt Mason prepare for the toughest endurance test of their lives.

Fontana, WI, June 7, 2005: www.TwoCrazyGuysBikingAcrossAmerica.com    Sounds like a funny name for a team website but two local men are very serious about their bid to complete a 3,000 mile bike race . . . Race Across America www.raceacrossamerica.org (RAAM ). John Palmer of Fontana and Matt Mason of Walworth have been training since January to be ready for the world’s most grueling bike race.

Race Across America is a non-stop 3,047 mile transcontinental bike race that starts in San Diego, California and ends in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The riders will start off on June 21 and complete the race by July 1 at the latest. RAAM riders climb nearly 110,000 feet, four times the altitude of Mt. Everest.  They plan to cover approximately 400 miles every day during the race.

Both Wisconsin residents, the extreme duo formed Team Wisconsin to compete.  This is the first two-person team from Wisconsin ever to enter RAAM. Not only is this fact something that Wisconsinites can be proud of, they feel that they represent the "Average Joes" in the US. Faith, family, and careers are their first priority. Therefore, as amateur athletes, their training is designed around those obligations.

Outdoor Magazine, the most popular magazine on outdoor sports commissioned a panel of experts to rank the world’s toughest events.  RAAM ranked number one above the Iditarod Dog Sled Race and the U.S. Army’s Best Ranger Competition.  In fact, on their point system RAAM is 10 times harder than the Hawaii Ironman.

Team Wisconsin sponsors include MPC in Walworth, Gautam Gupta, M.D. in Chicagoland, Woodstar Products in Delavan, Gordy’s in Fontana, Pac Tour in Sharon, Amino Vital in New York, Specialized and Lake Geneva Cyclery in Lake Geneva, eClickPerfomance.com in Chicago, Four Lakes Athletic Club in Elkhorn, Mercy Medical Centers in Wisconsin, Walworth State Bank in Walworth, and Michael’s Cycles in Janesville.

Funds are still needed to complete the fundraising goal of $20,000.  If you would like to support Team Wisconsin mail your financial support to John Palmer, N-1511 Shadow Ln, Fontana, WI 53125.
